The man had been travelling from Parkes to the airport when his plane crashed into a paddock off Research Road just before 3pm.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but nothing could be done to save the male who was the pilot and sole occupant of the plane.
Police say the man was travelling alongside a friend, who was in another microlight aircraft, but there was no evidence to suggest they collided.
“We can confirm the deceased had a companion in another aircraft and they were flying towards Temora,” Detective Inspector Jeff Barr said.
Inspector Barr said the occupant of the second plane had been assisting police and NSW Police Air Wing with their investigations into the crash.
He also confirmed police attended Temora Airport to make inquiries and talk to possible travel companions.
A SouthCare helicopter, the State Emergency Services, NSW Fire and Rescue and paramedics attended the crash site.
A small fire started in the paddock upon impact but it was quickly extinguished before the blaze could spread.
Police remained at the scene until late last night and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
This is the second microlight plane crash to rock the region in recent weeks.
Last month, two men were rushed to hospital after their plane crashed into a paddock in West Wyalong shortly after take-off.
