RIVERINA Labor members have voted to endorse their candidate for the upcoming federal election. However, the successful nominee will not be named until June 25 but the party is believed to be thinking outside the square in an effort to win back the seat of Riverina. The Daily Advertiser can reveal the candidate-in-waiting is a women in her 20s who works in community services in Wagga and has been a member of the ALP since she was 19.The woman's name will not be released until she has been approved by the party's federal administration committee. The decision was made during a Riverina federal election committee meeting in Narrandera on Saturday, with members hoping youth will be a deciding factor for voters.Wagga branch president Glenn Elliot-Rudder said there were high hopes for the new candidate "You don't stand if you don't believe you can be an efficient and hard-working representative for the people of the Riverina, who will take local issues to federal parliament," he said.Peter Knox stood in the 2007 election but failed to make an impact against Kay Hull, however, it is a new ball game says Mr Elliott-Rudder."The Nationals have held Riverina for 30 years and it's a three-cornered race so I believe Labor has a chance to win, a hard chance but it can be done."The as-yet unnamed candidate will go up against Michael McCormack (Nationals), Craig Hesketh (One Nation), David Fletcher (Greens) and an unknown Liberal opponent.
