The excitement of a rushed evacuation and the fun of a sleepover at a family friend’s house has worn off and they’re missing their toys and a chance to sleep in their own beds.
The Tolland Public School students are just two of many affected by the floods which ravaged their close-knit community of North Wagga, but this family is about to get a boost.
Joint assistant principals at Tolland Public School Rachel Linsell and Helen Nixon have organised a ‘fun day’ at the school to raise money for the food-affected family.
“It was awful to see photographs and footage of the flooding,” Ms Linsell said.
“Helen and I thought we should knock our heads together and think of a way to help one of our families and everyone has jumped at the idea.”
Today will see students come dressed in their most colourful clothes with face-painting stalls, ice-cream stalls and worm races all taking place, with donations being taken to help the family rebuild their lives.
Mother of Emily and Amy, Stephanie Morrow, said she was overwhelmed by the support the school was offering.
“I think what the school is doing is marvellous,” she said.
“During the evacuation, I didn’t know anyone with a truck so we couldn’t grab Emily’s hoist and other special needs equipment.
“It’s the not knowing what I’m in for that I find the
hardest part of all of this.”
Tolland Public School will also be accepting community donations for the family; those wishing to donate can contact the school on 6931 1223.
