MORE than 750 people from around the world have descended on Wagga for the inaugural Geocaching Oz Mega Event.Participants from every state and territory as well as New Zealand, America and Switzerland travelled to Kurrajong Reserve, near Oura, for the special event. The hundreds of participants, each wearing a bright yellow name tag spread themselves throughout the city.Geocaching, a high-tech version of orienteering combined with hide and seek, allows competitors to use a GPS device to locate hidden caches.More than 80 caches were hidden across the district, from Ladysmith to Wagga and out to Uranquinty, forcing competitors to not only use their tracking skills but also smarts as they answered questions at each location. The weekend’s main competition is being called “Oz Megaopoly”, which sees each team collect answers at each location to work their way around the traditional Monopoly board. The winners, announced today, will take home more than $3000 in cash and prizes.Organiser Greg Shaw, who forms part of the Farmers Five team, said it was a fantastic way to introduce people to geocaching.“We had fireworks on Saturday night and a concert before a giant Easter egg hunt this morning (Sunday) so it has been a great way to celebrate two years of dedication to the Oz Mega Event,” he said.“Whilst here, the geocachers have commented on the beauty of Wagga and the vast array of cultural, sporting and leisure activities and facilities.“We hope more people will get involved in geocaching in the Riverina and discover how much fun can be had.”Today will see the Geocache Cito, or Cache-In Trash-Out, which will help clean up the reserve after the celebrations and packing of campers.
