Mumbai, featuring Australians Daniel Sams and Riley Meredith as well as Australian-Singaporean David, fell three runs short of Sunrisers Hyderabad's 6-193 at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rahul Tripathi scored 76 off 44 balls for Sunrisers who had to win to have any chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Indians opened with Sams and Meredith and the former dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the third over.

He then had Priyam Garg dropped on ten, an expensive mistake as the batter scored 32 off his next 16 balls before being dismissed.

Tripathi was then joined by Nicholas Pooran, who hit sixes off successive balls against Meredith. However, Meredith eventually had him caught for 38 off 22 balls.

Meredith finished with 1-44 of his four overs, Sams 1-39 off his four.

Chasing 194 for an improbable win, Mumbai's openers Rohit Sharma (48) and Ishan Kishan (43) put on 95 for the first wicket. It was Sharma's highest score this IPL season, before he fell in the 11th over to Washington Sundar.

Mumbai were reduced to 4-127 thereafter as Umran Malik struck three times, dismissing Kishan, Tilak Varma (8) and Sams (15), with the latter two falling in the 15th over.

David gave Mumbai hope with his quickfire knock, including three fours and four sixes, but fell at the end of the 18th over attempting a suicidal run to keep the strike.

"Till about the second-last over, I thought we had it," Rohit said.

"Great batting effort, but we just fell short.

"We wanted to try a few things, keeping one eye on the future."

It was Mumbai's 10th loss in 13 games this season.
