Sean O'Hara, the owner of the Sporties Hotel, said about $600,000 was spent revamping the "rundown" pub last year, and he expects to spend a similar amount again this year.

A development application has been submitted to Wagga City Council, seeking permission to undergo more renovations, including the construction of an outdoor bar, a new entrance, new bathrooms, a terrace and additional car parks.

Mr O'Hara said he has been planning the renovations since he and his syndicate purchased the pub for more than $5 million in April last year and he was looking forward to seeing his dream become reality.

"The pub has got a lot of character but it definitely needs a facelift," he said.

"When we purchased it the pub was very small and didn't have a lot of interior space at all, so we really wanted to make it bigger and more inviting."

Recent renovations include the installation of an outdoor seating area and a restructure of the pub's interior.

Sporties Hotel general manager Joseph Kirk said these works have already transformed the venue and the final renovations will take it to the next level.

"It was a very old, very dark pub and there was a lot that was really old-fashioned so we've just sort of opened it right up, made it lighter and a more inviting place for people to come," Mr Kirk said.

"Already people have been making a lot of comments and they notice there's been a huge change as soon as they walk up to the venue.

"With what's to come I think people are really going to want to come down and experience the change."

Mr O'Hara is hoping to have the development application approved in April or May, after which the six-month renovation process will begin.

He said many of the most disruptive renovations were completed last year, meaning the inconvenience to customers would be "minimal" during the final phase of the revamp.

Mr Kirk said a balancing act would be required to keep operations in full flow while the work takes place.

"It will definitely require some balancing but thankfully the four-week lockdown last year was both lucky and unlucky because it meant we could jump in and do some of the more disruptive works without having to close the bar," he said.

The hotel has also received approval to install more gaming machines and an extension to the gaming room is included in the plans.
