Fresh off his first Leo Hartley Memorial win with Savannah on New Year's Eve, Mitchell and his kennel star head to Wentworth Park, his first runner there in about eight years.
Savannah has won six of her 15 starts including three in a row at Wagga after digging deep to win last Friday's $4350 feature (525m).
"It was a bit nerve-wracking, she bombed the start a bit and then was working a bit on the line. But she ran better time than she has before so she got away with it," Mitchell said of the $1.65 favourite's narrow win.
Mitchell took Savannah to Wentworth Park for a run on the track early this week and was pleased with her.
He knew early on she was handy and is confident there's upside heading into the grade five 520m race.
"Yeah, she's pretty smart. Right at the start when I first started trialling her she was running times that I haven't had a dog running before," he said.
Mitchell has been in Queensland for five years, only moving back to Wagga a couple of months ago.
His hopes this Friday at Wagga rest with Let's Go Brooke who's chasing three wins in three weeks at the track, all over 320m.
"I didn't think she was that good to start with but she grew a leg the last couple of starts," he said.
"If she comes out like she has been, she should be pretty hard to beat."
Wagga's 11-race card on Friday kicks off at 6.27pm.
