Dr McGirr announced on Wednesday morning that he received test result while on leave.
"I wanted to share with you all that I have tested positive to COVID-19," Dr McGirr stated on social media.
"I am fully vaccinated, and received a positive test result [on Tuesday].
"The source of my infection is not clear. I had been intending to take some leave this week, but am now isolating at home."
A statement from Dr McGirr's office said he had notified close contacts and was following all directions of NSW Health.
"Dr McGirr's symptoms have so far been mild," the statement said.
The 61-year-old independent Wagga MP and former medical services executive director was one of nearly 380 people who tested positive across the Murrumbidgee Local Health District (MLHD) in the 24 hours to 8pm on Tuesday.
Dr McGirr made no further comment yesterday but dozens of his Facebook followers left comments wishing him a speedy recovery.
"Thank you for sharing and best wishes for a terrific outcome and recovery real soon," one person commented, and another stated "So sorry to hear this Joe. Please take care. Thinking of you and family."
Dr McGirr attended a public event at Wagga Base Hospital on December 28 with NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, Regional Health Minister Bronnie Taylor, Wagga-based Nationals MLC Wes Fang and MLHD chief executive Jill Ludford and director of medical services Len Bruce.
Mr Fang said he had not been identified as a close contact and the hospital event was run with strict COVID safety rules.
"I've asked Dr Joe if there is anything I can do to help. We share a strong working relationship and also a friendship and I have told him on a personal level that I was thinking of him," he said.
Dr McGirr's electorate office in Wagga has been closed to the public for the holiday period since December 23.
Dr McGirr was ordered into isolation in June last year after COVID-19 was found at NSW Parliament House but did not pick up the infection at that time.
