NSW Health announced that 205 of the state's more than 20,000 new cases detected in the 24 hours to 8pm Sunday were residents of the Murrumbidgee Local Health District.

The region's previous daily high was set at the weekend, with 201 detections of coronavirus declared on Sunday.

Four more people - two men and two women - in NSW succumbed to the virus in the same time period.

"Two people were aged in their 70s, one in their 80s and one in their 90s," NSW Health said.

The Monday announcement is a record for the local health district [LHD], which until mid-last month had relatively held the virus at bay despite isolated outbreaks.

More than 1100 people have tested positive for the virus across the region in the past four weeks.

Despite the new record, the Murrumbidgee district had the lowest tally on Monday morning, as the Omicron variant surges across the state.

The Hunter New England LHD recorded 1612 cases, the Illawarra Shoalhaven tallied 535, Central Coast 514, just shy of 400 cases emerged in Northern NSW, 222 were found on the Mid North Coast and another 230 have been added to the Southern NSW LHD figures.

However, more than 500 cases are yet to to be assigned to an LHD, NSW Health said, and changes that come into effect on Tuesday should see the vaccination rollout ramp up yet again as the window between double-dose and booster narrows.

"From [Tuesday], those 18 years and over are eligible for a booster if they had their second dose at least four months ago," NSW Health said.

"We urge people to get their booster dose as soon as they are eligible, to best protect themselves, their loved ones and the community from the ongoing transmission of COVID-19.

"We also strongly recommend that people aged 12 years and over who are severely immunocompromised have a third primary dose of vaccine from two months after their second dose."
