The seven-time Brian Lawrence Medal winner, who is both the leading runscorer and wicket taker for Wagga City, made an unbeaten 87 in his last match against junior club South Wagga on Saturday.

"It was great, it was pretty emotional but it is the right time," Nicolll said.

"I think the group is at a point now where there are plenty of youngsters around so they are in good stead.

"To win, chase down 250 and with a few overs left was really good."

Last week City were bowled out for 80, but this time around they weren't daunted by a bigger run chase set up by an unbeaten 115 by Blues all-rounder Blake Harper.

Harper was the mainstay of the premiers' innings, but their 5-253 was not enough to make it fourth victory to start the season.

"They probably went at par as the wicket was just dynamite," Nicoll said.

"I thought they were probably 30 runs short as both sides toiled manfully with the ball but we were able to capitalise and run them down.

"I thought Aaron Maxwell was amazing, it was the best he's batted in years and there's some good signs for the guys heading into the T20s after Christmas."

Nicoll thought Maxwell (102 not out) wound back the clock as he scored his first century since 2014.

Both went at better than a run a ball as the Cats got home with over five wickets to spare.

Nicoll thought their batting tempo was the key as they combined for a big partnership to bounce back to winning ways.

Things started off well for the Cats after the dangerous Alex Smeeth nicked off to Luke Naumann for two.

It was one of three wickets for the pace bowler, and he's just one of the next generation of Cats Nicoll has so much confidence in.

"He's a jet and is going to be a very good cricket player and has all the skill sets to be a good bowler," he said.

"He nicked off Alex Smeeth with a really good nut and once he gets his fitness and his strength up, as he's only 17, he is going to be a handful.

"He keeps the seam proud, allows it to swing and was magic."

The weekend's results see Wagga City, South Wagga, Wagga RSL and Lake Albert all level on 18 points heading into the Christmas break.

They all have a record of three wins, one loss and three draws with St Michaels and Kooringal Colts yet to taste success so far.
