KU Children's Services reached the milestone of 125 years in 2020, but due to the pandemic could not go ahead with any celebrations.
Then in 2021, it was the same story, so director Kerrie Harris said they decided to come up with a creative way to mark the milestone.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"The children and the staff [at KU Kookaburra Preschool] came up with the idea of collecting 125 things for the families and children using the hospital," Ms Harris said.
"So as a bit of a project, we made a poster with the number 125 ... and as the children donated the goods, they coloured it in.
"They were highly motivated with bringing things in, colouring-in and seeing the growth."
The gifts will be available in the paediatric and medical units, and for Layla Manwaring, who knows all too well how slowly time moves in the hospital, the initiative is a "great idea".
The 10-year-old hurt her arm at school and had to wait a while to see a doctor.
"I was focusing on the pain because it was so boring," she said.
"My mum was trying to get aunties and uncles to bring some more things ... so this will be great because no one will get bored anymore."
Amy Looney, a clinical nurse educator in paediatrics, said the donations would make a massive difference in helping to care for children.
"Children will recover physically better if they are happier and more entertained," she said.
Rebecca Devereux, a clinical nurse educator in the medical unit, said most people do not plan on coming to the hospital and having such items on hand at the hospital will ease the burden on families.
