Emergency services were called just before 7pm on Tuesday night to a property at Plums Road, The Rock after reports a person had been injured by farm machinery.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said five crews attended the job, and the Toll Ambulance Rescue Helicopter was also deployed.

"Upon arrival, paramedics treated one patient, a man in his twenties, for an amputation injury to one leg," they said.

"The patient was transported to Wagga Airport, then airlifted to The Canberra Hospital, in a serious but stable condition."

Family members understand that despite the severity of the man's injuries he still had the presence of mind to apply a tourniquet, almost certainly saving his own life.

Stephen Pollard the duty operations Manager for NSW Ambulance Southern Zone, said the patient suffered a "traumatic amputation" injury below his knee.

"Paramedics worked quickly to stem the bleeding and calm the patient in preparation for transport," he said.

"This incident is a serious reminder of the dangers of farm machinery, and I'd urge people on the land to please stay safe when using this equipment."

Riverina Police District Commander Andrew Spliet said two police officers were first on the scene of the incident and immediately took action.

"The young constables assessed the injury and rendered first aid," he said.

"My understanding is those initial actions went a fair way to ensuring this man is still with us."

Superintendent Spliet said a highway patrol officer then escorted an ambulance to Wagga Airport, where the patient was airlifted to Canberra Hospital.
