Setting a new two-year-old track record, Sugar Apple dominated his rivals in by far the fastest of the two heats.
Leading from barrier one, Sugar Apple was in a race of his own down the back straight on his way to a 14.6-metre victory.
Reinsman Blake Jones thought the son of Sweet Lou had plenty in reserve.
"He was really good and probably actually switched off a little bit when he dropped them down the back and you could feel him wonder where they went," Jones said.
"He still had the plugs in and I didn't turn the stick on him so I'm sure he had a little bit left in the tank."

Jones is making a habit of picking up some nice outside drives for Riverina features - and the Narrandera horseman certainly isn't complaining about it.
After setting a track record with Bar Room Banta in the NSW Breeders Challenge heats in September, Jones was at the helm as Sugar Apple set a new mark for the two-year-olds, and pushed the group one winner's time in the process, with a mile rate of 1:55.6.
"They can keep sending them down," Jones said. "I'm quite happy to let everyone else do the work and jump on on race day.
"It's worked out good with the last couple who have come down and it's nice to drive good horses."
Inter Dominion-winning trainer Jason Grimson has entrusted the two-year-old to Jones and partner Ellen Bartley for the group three series.
Jones can't help but be impressed with the former Kiwi who made it a perfect three from three since joining the former Young trainer's team.
"He takes a nice, long stride for a little horse and he is still a colt but he is pretty level headed and quiet," he said.
"He was very relaxed even after the race.
"I've come back in on horses when they've run that speed and they can be a bit stirry but he just stood there after the race and was very well-mannered and good to drive."
Jones is chasing his second success in the MIA Breeders Plate after piloting Business In Motion in 2013.
He believes the barrier draw will be crucial.
"You still have to give credit to Mister Rea as he has the runs on the board and National News was good too," Jones said.
"I don't think she let him go too much and he looked to have a fair bit in reserve too.
"The draws are going to play a big part so hopefully we can get a good one."
