Last Wednesday a morning tea and plant donation event was hosted in Batlow by Anglicare's bushfire recovery coordinator Jo Murrell, aiming to support community members impacted by the Dunns Road fire of 2019-20.
The plant donation was made possible by avid gardeners Keith and Eva Bergmeier, who donated more than 200 plants from their personal garden in Wagga.
The plant species included ferns, lavender, fuchsias, lilies, chrysanthemums, carnations and bromeliads.
"I just knew that Anglicare [was] doing a lot of relief in the fire zones," Mrs Bergmeier said.
"We often heard of the work they were doing in the area but we decided to wait until homes were rebuilt before offering the plants."
Anglicare's Mrs Murrell said she was delighted to receive the plants and pass them along to the community.
"As well as promoting environmental growth and renewal on people's properties, it's also a beautiful and tangible representation of the psychological recovery they themselves are going through," she said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
During the morning tea, mental health clinicians from the Murrumbidgee Local Health District were also on site to provide support to those impacted by bushfire.
"The morning tea is a wonderful chance to people to get together and check in on each other," Mrs Murrell said.
"People had a chat and a cup of tea, and were able to connect and heal.
"This sort of get together also shows people that Anglicare is still here supporting them, and allows us to gauge how people are doing."
Anglicare is encouraging people in Batlow and surrounding areas who still need support during the ongoing bushfire recovery phase to reach out to Mrs Murrell on 0490 707 543.
