Riverina Police District Commander Andrew Spliet said employees were making the time on Friday to head into the Berry Street donor centre as part of a blitz to boost supplies for patients this Christmas.

He said it was a time of year that often saw an increase in serious motor vehicle crashes and fatalities.

"This another way to do our bit for the community," Superintendent Spliet said.

"We all live in these communities, and a lot of the time, our local police will know people who are involved in these tragedies.

"Blood is always needed to help people, so this is a way that we can assist health services and residents."

'Bleed4Blue' is an annual, three-month law enforcement-focused blood drive that was launched in 2018 following the stabbing of Detective Sergeant John Breda at Maroubra on Australia Day 2018.

He lost almost 12 litres of blood as the medical team worked to save his life, and it took more than 100 bags of blood to keep him going, including 48 bags in one six-hour surgery.

Angela Gerlach, the acting manager of the Wagga Blood Donor Centre, said it was fantastic to have the NSW employees come in on Friday to donate.

According to Lifeblood, the most critical period for donations is December 23 to 28, and the part of blood used to treat trauma and cancer lasts only five days.

Ms Gerlach said the need for blood wouldn't take a break this between Christmas and New Year.

"In just Wagga alone, we need 300 donations a week," she said.

"People have life-threatening illnesses, accidents, surgeries, and so we always need blood.

"We encourage people to give the gift of life this Christmas."

Superintendent Spliet also encouraged Riverina residents to be safe on the roads when heading out to enjoy the festive season.

He said while people might be keen to see loved ones, speeding or not stopping for breaks is never worth the risk.

"Take regular breaks. Don't speed or drink and drive. Show some patience," Superintendent Spliet said.

"The last thing we want to see is any serious crashes or fatalities."

The centre is closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day, but residents can book in at any other time by visiting donateblood.com.au or calling 13 14 95.
