International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities.

The day aims to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities and promote inclusion through community awareness.

Intellectual Disability Mental Health Service leads Jasmin Lagaali, who done most of the organising, said she was impressed with the turnout and has hopes of making it an annual event.

The event was held at the Wagga Music Bowl on Macleay Street for the services clients and staff members, with food and drink and a DJ on the deck.

"International Day of People with Disability is held on December 1 every year and this year it happened to fall on a Friday, so we thought, what better day than to have a community event to celebrate," Ms Lagaali said.

"The event is aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disabilities. And, we wanted to celebrate the contributions and achievements of people with disabilities in what they bring to our community."

Inclusion and positivity are key factors not to go unnoticed if you ask Ms Lagaali.

"We're all part of the one community and I think it's important to recognise everyone within the community," she said.

With more than 60 people in attendance, Ms Legaali is pleased with her efforts.

New Directions Disability Services managing director Ryan Quarmby said he wanted to use the day to highlight the 'amazing' abilities of those with disabilities and the wonderful things they do for our communities.

"We still have a way to go, we could be more inclusive," he said.

"Nonetheless, we wanted to have the staff and clients here to celebrate the day.

"It's a great cause, celebrating and recognising the role and importance of those with disabilities within our community and the tremendous strength and resilience it takes them to overcome some of the barriers.

"Our community is so much brighter because of what people with disabilities bring and achieve."
