The daughter of Mach Three, bred by the Harpleys, racked up her third win in seven starts with a storming finish to nab the David Kennedy-trained Whereyabintwistin right at the finish.
"The Mach Three's are usually a bit hot and I was expecting that with here, but she's never been, she's been pretty lazy," Harpley said.
"Her first three or four starts she was going good but she wasn't putting in. She had the ability, hence her placings (four in her first six starts) and winning a couple but not really knowing what to do.
"But she's finally clicked now."
Macarena Madi was a $16 chance in the field of five, with the only challenger to Scott Hewitt's $1.40 favourite Lulu Mae expected to be David Kennedy's Whereyabintwistin.
But pre-race plans went out the window when the favourite galloped at the start and Jackson Painting took Whereyabintwistin to lead comfortably.
He buried the favourite's hopes of storming back into the race with a very hot 26.6 third quarter but Macarena Madi was the surprise swooper at the finish. winning in a mile rate of 1.55.2.
Harpley is excited to be taking Macarena Madi to Bathurst for a big night of pacing on December 1, while Hewitt made no mistake in the second fillies heat with Zenxena ($1.60f) overcoming Knight Kiss and Couldnt Recommend. Zenxena has now won five of her last seven starts.
Brad Hewitt claimed the two-year-old colts and geldings heat (1740m) with Escape Artist ($2.80). Hewitt made a big move from the back of the field 700m from home and outlasted the Michael Hawke-trained Im In Trouble ($2.30f, driven by Blake Jones) at the finish.
It was the first leg of a double for the Goulburn trainer, with former Kiwi pacer Debutante Party ($1.60f) clocking a 1.54.6 mile rate to win the last over 2270m.
Jones and Narrandera trainer Ellen Bartley teamed up for their own breakthrough win with another former New Zealander early in the program when Our Royal Ruby scored her first career win at start number three for the stable.
The $1.20 favourite led throughout and left her rivals flat-footed 500m from home when Jones said go, and they careered away to a 21.5m win in front of a handful of owners.
"For a few of them, it's their first horse. And Blake and I have a couple of young fellas who work for us and we bought them a share in her. They're at school so they couldn't be here but they're over the moon," Bartley said.
"She did it really easy and I think she's going to get better as she gets older. She's still only three, she's got a bit of growing to do.
"She's a bit light-framed but I think she'll bulk as she gets a bit older. At the moment she's got pure speed but if we can get a bit of strength into her as well, it will be good."
