Mr McCormack was preselected by the National Party in May to recontest the Riverina electorate but said in June that he would "take some time to think about my future" after losing the leadership of the National Party.

Mr McCormack told The Daily Advertiser this week that there was "no change" to his intention to run as he wanted to represent the Riverina again.

"I love doing this job, there is plenty of work to do; I've been here in Forbes with the flooding and I've been having a look at the local roads and community infrastructure that we did, that was my program that I put in place to help through COVID," he said.

"I haven't lost the drive or determination to cross the length and breadth of the Riverina electorate, it's the community I love and I want to see it be its best self and I want to continue to represent it.

"Being the Member for Riverina is a great job and I've never lost sight of what it means to be the community's representative in Canberra and over the years I have been able to achieve quite a bit for Wagga and the 11 other council areas I represent."

The date of the federal election has yet to be called but many commentators expect it to be early next year.

Mr McCormack said the date of the election was up to others.

"The only person who knows the date of the next election is the Prime Minister [Scott Morrison] and that's his prerogative," Mr McCormack said.

"He gets to choose when he drives out to Government House and asks the Governor General to issue the writs and that will happen when it happens."

The NSW head offices of the Labor and Greens parties were contacted for comment about the status of their preselections for Riverina and preparations for the campaign but both did not respond prior to publication.

Mr McCormack was first preselected for the 2010 election as the National Party's successor candidate to then Riverina MP Kay Hull.

Mr McCormack said this week that he intended to serve a full term if re-elected.

"If I'm fortunate enough to have the Riverina place its faith in me again, I won't let them down," he said.
