In the wake of Australia's sensational Olympics earlier this year, Wagga Little Athletics Club is hoping to encourage new track and field participants to the sport with two open nights for newcomers.

'Come and Try' nights will be held at the Bill Jacob Athletics Centre at Jubilee Park this Thursday and again next week, for any new and returning athletes, easing into the new season before the club nights officially begin on December 2.
Club president Mick Cameron believes the Tokyo Games, and the fact that the Olympics is coming back to Australia in just over a decade, means it's an important year time for the sport.
"Backing up from the Olympics that kids, it's fresh in people's minds and the fact that Brisbane has won the Olypmics for 2032 is a boost too," Cameron said.
"Kids getting into it at the moment, it's a good pathway. A lot of them will be in their 20s by the time of the Brisbane games."
Towards the end of a second calendar year of COVID-disruption for sport, the athletics fraternity hopes to see plenty of athletes, from pre-school age up to 17, keen to run, jump and throw.
"With COVID, kids are busting to get into sport and parents are looking for sports to get kids into," Cameron said, adding that little athletics is focussed on improvement rather than competition.
"The main part of the sport is about bettering your own times and distances."
The start to the athletics season had been delayed with community sport on hold, then awaiting COVID regulations. The Wagga club nights will also go up against junior touch football for the first time.
With two weeks to go, it's hard to say how final registrations will look but the club hopes the come and try nights are a success, offering a taste of track and field without having to commit to registration.
WWLAC believe there could also be opportunity in touch being on right next door this summer, and decided not to move away from the Thursday night tradition.
"We'll wait and see what the impact is. We've been running for about 30 years on a Thursday night so we haven't jumped in and changed it," Cameron said.
More information on the Come and Try nights is available at the club's facebook page. RSVP's are requested prior to the event.
