In the past month, a truck driver in his 40s and a six-year-old boy have both died in separate crashes along Holbrook Road, about 40 kilometres south of Wagga.

Local farmer Paul Cocking said the incidents are just the latest in a long history of crashes along the "dangerous and not fit for purpose" road.

"The road is not wide enough, there's too many blind turns, it's uneven and the cambers are all wrong," Mr Cocking said.

"There have been two deaths recently and more people are going to die unless they do something about the design of the road."

The road was once just a country laneway but in recent years it has become one of the main thoroughfares between Wagga and Albury.

Mr Cocking said traffic on the road is increasing every month and it is currently managing more cars than it was ever meant to.

"Albury and Wagga aren't getting any smaller and the road needs a complete overhaul," he said.

"It's not fair for the farmers and the emergency services who have to go out there to the accidents every time."

The farmer said it was a "terrible feeling" for the community every time an accident occurs on the road.

The road was described as a "disgrace" by Mangoplah resident Charlie Quinnell, who agreed the recent increase in traffic had worsened the problem.

"It's really rough and some of the culverts just throw your vehicle around," Mr Quinnell said.

"There's potholes but just the narrative of the road has always been an issue and there's even more traffic on it now."

Mr Cocking is planning to put together a petition signed by concerned residents and will be approaching Wagga City Council, as well as the state and federal governments, to push for the road to be overhauled.
