Not surprisingly, apart from one notable exception, scores were high in all grades. There is no doubt most of the field will be looking forward to a vastly improved showing in Saturday's second round.
Leading the charge in A Grade are low-markers, Heath Russell, Mick Hazell and Kyle Tucket, each scoring 80 off the stick, followed by Jeremy Whalan and Chris Goss with 81.
One player who really rose to the challenge was Elliott Green, who shot a terrific 84 off the stick to lead the B Grade scratch event by five shots from Wayne Jerrick on 89, followed by Keith Bevan 90, and Nathan Starr, Tod Gunning and Steve Rodham on 91.
Elliott's nett score of 66 leaves him five shots ahead of A Graders, Bob Alexander and Chris Goss, and B Grade new-comer, Peter Tritton. Dean Merrigan leads the C Grade contingent with a scratch score of 96, ahead of Rod Whitlock and Eddie Wall on 98, and Terry McMillan, 100.
The course itself continues to be the subject of plenty of praise from members and visitors alike. The club's new greens are starting to settle, and with the fairways now contoured, the place is looking a picture .
Saturday's second round of the Championships will be followed by rounds three and four on Saturday and Sunday, November 13-14.
