Although his long shot Melbourne Cup ride Carif finished well back in the field, McDougall had already added to his burgeoning reputation with a race-to-race double.
He began by piloting the Matt Cumani-trained Team Captain ($7) to victory in the other staying race of the day, The Macca's Run (2800m), comfortably holding off Accountability and Good Idea.
In the next race he took advantage of barrier one to settle Excelman ($7.50) just off the speed in the Resimax Group Subzero Handicap (1400m) to cruise to another easy win.
Carif was rated a triple figure shot in Australia's biggest race later in the day, and ended up finishing 18 in the 22-horse field.
