Crude drawings of male genitalia, a swastika and a racial slur were found along the Lake Albert walking track near the golf club and Lakeside Drive on Thursday night.
Mayor Greg Conkey, who was riding along the lake on Friday morning, said it was an "appalling" thing for anyone to do.
He said hundreds of people, including families with young children, use the path every day.
"t's one of the most popular walking tracks in the city. The levee is up there as well, but I think this has to be the most popular," Cr Conkey said.
"To have this happen is just appalling.
"We're a lot of money and putting in a lot of work into doing it up. So it's just disappointing to see."
Cr Conkey said the racist language and depiction of the swastika went against the values of the Wagga community.
"Where do they get that from, quite frankly?" Cr Conkey said.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We have over 112 different nationalities in the city. We are a very proud multicultural city. This city does not want any part of that."
After coming across the imagery, Cr Conkey notified the council and asked them to take action to remove them as soon as possible.
Sue Cathro and Judy English were enjoying their usual morning walk along Lake Albert on Friday and were shocked after seeing photos of the offensive drawings.
Ms Cathro said the track was a great way to get in her exercise, and she loves seeing the lake so full after it had been at low levels for so long.
"It's so nice and getting out and about, so it's disappointing that people would do that when the council has gone to the trouble of making it better for us," she said.
"People who come along and do that spoil it for everyone else."
Ms English said she also enjoys the track because of its lovely outlook and the wildlife.
She said it was unacceptable for there to be that sort of imagery in a spot where young children could see it.
Wagga City Council dispatched a team to deal with the vandalism on Friday morning.
