Police have launched an investigation after five guns and ammunition were stolen from a home in the western Riverina.

A break-in at a Balranald home was reported to Barrier Police District on Saturday, with the firearms among the missing items.
It is believed the break-in occurred some time between March and October.

"Police have been told that four rifles, a shotgun and ammunition were stolen from a safe at the home," NSW Police said.
A crime scene was established at the Market Street home and has been examined by specialist forensic officers.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or any suspicious activity in the area, or has dashcam or phone footage, is urged to come forward by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Investigations are continuing.
