This year was 23-year-old Rebecca Dean's first time trying out for a Showgirl competition, and she said it was incredibly "humbling" to be selected as the winner.

"I definitely didn't expect to be chosen, that's for sure," she said.

Originally postponed until November, the Wagga Show Society made the difficult decision to cancel this year's show due to ongoing coronavirus restrictions.

The Showgirl competition was able to go ahead, however, with a small ceremony held this month.

Kylie Wessels was selected as runner-up, with the competition judged by Bev Keast, Mitch Dwyer and Kate Wickson.

Last years Wagga Showgirl Kate Webster was also in attendance, having become the second runner-up at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

Ms Dean, who works as a farm consultant and is studying agronomy, has been on the show committee since 2017 when she first moved to Wagga.

Her role is largely behind-the-scenes, so she hopes her time as Showgirl will give her a confidence boost - particularly around public speaking.

"It would be really great to meet all those other women across the countryside in New South Wales that all hopefully share similar values," Ms Dean said, with Showgirls across the state going on to compete in a zone competition next year.

The winners from the zone finals will then have the chance to compete at the Royal Easter Show to become the young woman of the year.
