Police are investigating a major incident on the Hume Highway after a driver travelling more than 180km/h along the highway collided with a tree.

The single-vehicle crash occurred just after 4PM on Friday afternoon on the Hume Highway near Snowball Road.
Ahead of the crash, officers from Riverina Police District received reports of a Ford Falcon travelling over the speed limit along the Hume Highway at Tarcutta at 4PM.

Traffic and Highway Patrol officers sighted the vehicle travelling northbound at speeds of between 178 and 188 kmph.
NSW Police said the officers followed the car in an attempt to catch up but lost sight of it before the car left the road and collided with a tree about 10km south of Gundagai.
Paramedics were called to the scene at 4:15PM and treated a 30-year-old man at the scene for serious injuries.
The man incurred chest and head injuries as well as neck and shoulder injuries and was taken to Wagga Base Hospital in a serious condition.
He was in a stable condition at Wagga Base Hospital on Saturday morning.
A total of four ambulance crews as well as two rescue helicopters attended the incident.
A crime scene was established and examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit, all northbound lanes on the highway remaining closed for more than ten hours.
The lanes reopened for traffic at around 3:00am on Saturday morning.
A critical incident team from Murrumbidgee Police District have established Strike Force Barrabool to investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident
That investigation will be subject to an independent review.
Traffic conditions are said to have returned to normal.
