Two Riverina men have been charged after a package was intercepted that contained heroin and ice worth almost $10 million.

On Monday, officers from Australian Border Force intercepted a consignment of sewing thread that arrived in Sydney from Kazakhstan, destined for an address in Griffith.
During the search, 9.7kg of methylamphetamine and almost 2.1kg of heroin was found concealed in the batches, representing a combined estimated street value of $9.73 million.
Following an investigation, police attended a rural property on Murrumbidgee Avenue, Hanwood about 2.30pm on Thursday.
Two men, aged 27 and 40, allegedly ran from police and were arrested a short distance away.
During a search of the property, police seized items relating to prohibited drugs, as well as a semi-automatic shotgun.

They were taken to Griffith Police Station where the older man was charged with two counts of attempting to possess a large commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug - serious indictable offence, and possessing an unauthorised prohibited firearm.

The men were refused bail to appear in Griffith Local Court on Friday.
