While most community sports have been shut down, swimming pools were one of the handful of facilities permitted to reopen once the regional lockdown ended.

And WSC head coach Gennadiy Labara said they have already had enquiries from families hoping to join and scratch their sporting itch.

"We have a chance to pick up some new members, some younger one who might like swimming," he said.

"Already we're having people asking if they can bring their kids along, because a lot of community sport is shut down and maybe won't start again this year."

Labara said the squad only missed a couple of weeks of training, and are looking forward to competing again after most of the winter carnivals were cancelled.

As a result, the swimming schedule is expected to go well into February.

"We missed a couple of weeks but we used Zoom and played some games on there. Then when we got back into the pool everyone was excited to get back into training.

"We weren't missing many swimmers when we returned and they were happy to be back.

"We have very good numbers still and it's looking promising for long course season."

Labara said it was essential for the juniors to get back into their normal routine after a period of being deprived of sport and connection with friends.

"It's very important for the younger ones because they need face to face connection with their friends. We need to keep kids active," he said.

"The summer format is different to normal, a lot of competitions were cancelled through winter and most of the competitions have now moved to January.

"We'll go into January-February. We're doing a lot of club nights, which will be at the end of October."
