HE had to wait nearly 2000 days for his AFL shot. Now Matt Flynn has set his sights on being the long term first choice ruckman for Greater Western Sydney.

After five years in the Giants system, the Narrandera product played 12 games for the Giants this season, averaging 12 disposals and 18 hitouts per game.
Injuries denied him a chance to make his AFL debut earlier, and the 24-year-old's campaign this year was ended after a dislocated shoulder he suffered against Sydney in round 18 ended his season.
But Flynn showed more than enough to justify he belongs at AFL level, and looks set to be rewarded with a new Giants contract in coming days, likely for two years.
"I'm just going through a few things with them, but hopefully that's all sorted in the next couple of weeks or so," Flynn told The Daily Advertiser.
"I'm confident I'll grab a contract, which is nice. That's the talk at the moment (two years), but we'll wait and see."
While the injury denied him a chance to play finals, the season was reward for Flynn's persistence after he spent five years on the system waiting in the wings.
At this stage ruck stalwart Shane Mumford seems more likely than not to retire, which means Flynn and Braydon Preuss, who also had his year curtailed by shoulder surgery, could take the reins.
"Personally I always had that belief I could play AFL, but to finally do it and produce good footy just instils that a little bit more I think," he said.
"I'm really confident in the football I played this year, and I've always had belief I can be a number one ruckman for a team in the AFL. This year only furthered that belief in myself, I'm very confident.
"You do the hard yards and finally get a reward, you don't want to be down the bottom end again."
IN OTHER NEWS
Flynn expects to be ready for the start of pre season, and said the fight the undermanned Giants showed to reach the second week of finals has given them a platform to build on.
"I'm nine weeks post surgery now, just trying to get some range and strength back into it and what not," he said.
"It was tough to miss finals, but it's a good time to do it in hindsight really.
"It was really pleasing to string a few games together and have my best year in to date. It was a disappointing end for both the team and myself, but it was a positive year I think.
Our guys have got that in them. We're a tough group, we've got a lot of young and enthusiastic guys and when they got their chance they showed what they've got.
"We never want to go down without a fight. We've always thought of ourselves as a united group and we've proved to the AFL we've got some ticker in us."
"A lot of young guys came through which hopefully sets us up for the future. On a personal not it was good to finally get a game and play some footy I was proud to produce too."
Flynn had to wait until his sixth game to sing the team song, but it was the exclamation point on a journey he's had to work hard to achieve.
"One thing you do dream to do is the Gatorade shower so it was good to tick that off," he said.
"Last year was quite frustrating. Although we were in a fortunate position to be travelling around and not in lockdown, it was quite hard to be not playing personally when you're away from home.
