EnergyConnect is a plan for a 330-kilovolt transmission line running nearly 900 kilometres from Wagga to Robertstown, SA with a budget of $1.9 billion and an estimated completion date in 2023.
TransGrid's upgrade, underwritten by the federal government, will increase the capacity of the new transmission line by at least 50 per cent between Wagga and south of Coleambally.
TransGrid executive manager of delivery Craig Stallan said the planned upgrade would save NSW households approximately $600 million by avoiding the need to build a new connection in the future.
"We are constantly thinking ahead to provide the best outcomes for customers, communities and the energy system as a whole." Mr Stallan said.
The upgrade will allow a 500-kilovolt line between Wagga and south of Coleambally, raising future capacity by another 250 per cent.
