Acting Superintendent Winston Woodward from the Riverina Police District said these incidents were "unacceptable".

He said the police had been responding to separate incidents, and at each one, the alleged person of interest had been drinking and became aggressive, "turning on police".

"Alcohol was involved in each one," Acting Superintendent Woodward said.

"Our police officers are not punching bags.

"If you assault a police officer, you will get a court date, but I don't want to see that."

Acting Superintendent Woodward said there had been awful incidents in Sydney and Melbourne of police officers being attacked, and he did not wish to see similar behaviour arise in the Riverina.

He urged residents to remember that the women and men in blue are just doing their job and have friends and family who want them to get home safely.

"I think it's sad that alcohol can impair your judgment so bad that you end up going home either in the back of a police van or to the station, and you get charges," Acting Superintendent Woodward said.
