Charlotte Caslick looked to end her run of second placings when she was first past the post in the Steel Supplies Maiden Pace (1740m) at Wagga a fortnight ago.

But the mare was relegated to second placing in the steward's room, a result that made it six consecutive second placings in a row.

It is a somewhat unwanted claim to fame for Charlotte Caslick, whose six seconds come from just nine career starts.

She will step out again on Friday in the TAB Venue Mode Maiden Pace (1740m) from gate three but trainer Peter Birks is not getting too confident.

"How confident can you be after six seconds in a row," Birks said with a laugh.

"We can only hope so. She's had a few chances. It's a bit hard to write a book on her and say today's the day but she's working good.

"She'll be thereabouts anyhow."

Birks believes Charlotte Caslick is taking some time to build confidence after a hiccup early in her career.

"I'd say a lot of it has got to do with greenness. She hasn't had many starts," he said.

"She only had three starts and then I had a smash on her and she lost a heap of confidence. It took a heap of time to get her going again, she just lacks a bit of confidence yet.

"A couple of horses that have beat her have gone on and done a bit. She's probably not quite good enough. The bloke who owns her, he's happy with her so that's the main thing."

That bloke is Crookwell owner Michael McGeechan, who is obviously a rugby fan having named the mare after Australian sevens star Charlotte Caslick.

He has reason to be happy too with the four-year-old having already earned $9600 without registering a win.

Birks was disappointed to lose the last start on protest.

"If the other horse on the outside had of stopped driving, I would have said yes (it was warranted), but when they were both still driving, I thought it could go either way," he said.

Birks will leave the tactics to driver Sam Hewitt from gate three but believes she is a better mare from behind.

Meantime, Birks' stable star Hell Of A Memory is recovering after pulling up with a virus from his last-start ninth in the Breeders Challenge heat at Leeton.

Charlotte Caslick will take part in the opening event on Wagga's nine-race card on Friday at 12.53pm.
