Two people have been flown to a Melbourne hospital after being trapped in their wrecked car in the southern Riverina overnight.

Three police officers managed to free a man and a woman from the vehicle after it crashed into a tree south of Mathoura around 9pm on Tuesday.
Police say they were trapped for some time.
The vehicle was travelling north when it left the roadway and hit the tree, police said.

A 35-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Holden Acclaim stationwagon, suffered severe injuries in the crash.
The driver, a 37-year-old man, sustained serious leg injuries, police said.
They were treated at the scene before being airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital in serious conditions.
A crime scene was established at the crash site and Murray River Police District officers have commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
