The Goannas were well poised to launch for a first flag since 1993 after winning 13 of 15 games, finishing second to Ganmain-Grong Grong-Matong on percentage on the ladder.

But the cancellation of the season before finals could be played, plus a contentment with the way he and his family has been treated by the club, means Castles "can't see myself playing anywhere else".

Albury-based Castles kicked 71 goals in 11 games, and was given flexibility by the club to bypass games which required long travel.

"I've already had discussions (with the club) and we're working out what's best. I've informed them I want to stay there," Castles said.

"I've got some unfinished business and we had a chance to go all the way. It's a bit hard to leave now when we didn't get a chance to have that success.

"I haven't signed or anything (yet) but there was never any intention to leave, I can't see myself playing anywhere."

Castles said he is looking for some stability after playing for a number of clubs in recent years.

"Their understanding with my work and family commitments and the fact I have to travel, actually caring about my personal life is a big factor," he said.

"I don't want to jump from club to club, the last three years I've had to meet new people and start that process all over again.

"I just want some stability and I feel comfortable there. Hopefully I can get a few more games next year and kick a few more goals, to kick 100 for them would be nice.

"Personally I thought I did my job, if I could kick straight I could have kicked a lot more. With a bit more training and practice, from round one hopefully I'll be kicking at 80 per cent instead of 50 or 60.

"There's a bit of travel involved, but the freedom of not having to play the Leeton, Narrandera or Griffith games I get to spend some more time with the kids. As you get a bit older you look at that as more important."

Goannas president Jesse Cunningham said the club had begun talks with Castles in an effort to retain him.

"Trent's an unbelievable player. There's not too many players you can have in your side that people drive through the gates just to come and watch," Cunningham said.

"Trent indicated he wanted to get the season over and done with, then speak down the track what the future holds for him in 2022.

"Those conversations have started and over the next couple of weeks, hopefully we'll put all the pieces together and know where we stand from there."
