Mister Rea ($1.22) overcame a difficult second row draw and some early carnage to take out the $10,000 NSW Breeders Challenge 2YO Colts and Geldings Heat (1720m).
Mister Rea sat back in the field off a hot early speed and spotted the leader about 35 metres with just one lap remaining. But the two-year-old showcased his versatility but launching a strong run from back in the field to win by 15 metres in a mile rate of 1:56.5.
The win ensured the Ray Walker-trained gelding took his unbeaten record to six.
Coolamon driver Daryll Perrot was impressed by Mister Rea's latest effort.
"It was just good to get him through. I just hope all goes well from here. That first quarter was a bit hairy, that's for sure," Perrot told Harness Racing NSW after the race.
"He was pretty flat for the first couple of furlongs, just to catch the field, because I reckon he probably gave them 30 (metres) start, just to get out of the scrimmage so he's done well to finish it off."
The David Micallef-trained Eucan Roll ($12) grabbed second, ahead of $71 chance Excelente.
Mister Rea will now progress to the semi-finals of the Breeders Challenge, to be held at Menangle on October 16.
