Cricket NSW released its return to play update on Monday afternoon, a document guiding cricket clubs back into training ahead of the upcoming season.

Any organised or competitive cricket matches are still outlawed, like the rest of community sport, but clubs are free to begin training, under strict guidelines, to prepare for the season.

Cricket Wagga is still unsure about when it will be able to begin its season but Cricket NSW south west area manager Luke Olsen encouraged clubs to begin training.

"We're encouraging them to get out and train and get ready for the season for when we are given the go ahead to play," Olsen said.

"They can start now. Some of them I've noticed are looking at October training, some are looking at training this weekend as a get together, which is great.

"We're still working through what it means for playing."

Wagga cricket clubs are able to train due to being part of a Local Government Area (LGA) that was able to come out of NSW's statewide lockdown last weekend.

Clubs have two options for training formats. They can train in groups of up to 20 people, or over that but must have COVID-19 safety plans in place.

"They can train with 20 people or under and they don't have to worry about COVID safe plans, they can just train as a group under 20 people," Olsen explained.

"As soon as it hits over that 20 person threshold, they need to have a COVID safe plan, they need to have QR coding.

"The other layer we've got is around the sanitisation, making sure you've got hand sanitiser, making sure, where possible, you don't share equipment, you stay your 1.5 metres, you get in, you train and get out. All those messages that we've been portraying across the last 18 months, they're the messages we're saying when you get there."

Cricket Wagga was set to start on October 16, but that is up in the air pending the NSW Government's stance on community sport and vaccination rates.

Olsen said cricket officials had no further information than anyone else on when the season may be able to start.

"We don't have an idea on a starting date yet. That's still to play out," he said.
