It was supposed to be the busy season for florist and flower farmer Sophie Kurylowicz, but the COVID lockdown cancelled more than 20 spring wedding bookings.

So she decided to take the opportunity and create a new challenge for herself.

Ms Kurylowicz has been running Little Triffids Flowers from her North Wagga backyard since 2014 but is now set to expand and open up in a new shopfront on Fitzmaurice Street.

"When we lost our second wedding season in as many years, it seemed like the right time to expand our retail offering and focus on an area of the business that was able to function," she said.

"We grew this business literally from seed, so it's a fairly daunting next step to take.

"We do things a little bit differently, with a focus on a product that is floral foam-free, Australian grown, and local-first, and that focus on sustainability will continue with the other brands we stock as well."

Ms Kurylowicz said that starting a shopfront also meant she could keep on her employees who were impacted by the cancelled weddings.

But she won't be in the space alone, as Ms Kurylowicz has also teamed up with a local bookseller to share the area.

Kate Pryor has been in the game for 20 years and will be setting up shop with Little Triffids with her pre-loved book boutique, the Two Brown Cats Bookshop.

Ms Pryor has been collecting books for two decades and has developed a collection of children's books, art books and everything in between.

The pair said it takes a bit of the burden and stress away having a second business to share overhead costs with and as a sounding board for ideas and styles.

"I'm thrilled to be opening the doors to our shop, adding another local business to the main street, and with so many fantastic businesses in our block, we're amongst great company," Ms Pryor said.

"Soph and I share a commitment to working at a local level and a passion for unearthing unique treasures with a personal touch.

"After working alongside Sophie for the past four years assisting in her studio, it just made sense to continue working together to bring it about."

Ms Pryor met Ms Kurylowicz after a mutual friend sent her flowers from Little Triffids, and they soon sparked a great friendship.

"I get the best of both worlds - working with my dear friend amongst books and blooms," she said.

The business will be open every Monday to Saturday from September 15 at 30 Fitzmaurice Street.
