Students are back in classrooms this week following the easing of lockdown restrictions which kicked in over the weekend.

For Abigail Combs, a year 6 student at Wagga Wagga Christian College, the return to school meant she could see her friends for the first time since mid-August.

"I actually had quite a few friends I really wanted to see and I got to spend recess and lunch with them and it was really good," Abigail said.

"We were just catching up and chatting, we really like to laugh with each other and we did quite a lot of that today."

Multiple restrictions have been put in place to ensure the schools are still COVID safe, including year groups being separated at recess and lunchtime.

High school students are also required to wear masks when indoors or outdoors, as are teachers and other staff.

But Abigail said the new rules didn't get in the way of what she hopes is the beginning of a fun-filled week.

"We were trying really hard to restrict how we do things but it all went well," she said.

"I'm really looking forward to the rest of the week. I think the teachers have a really fun week planned if we get all our work done so that will be really nice."

Abigail's mother Heidi Combs is the community relations officer at Wagga Wagga Christian College and said the return has been welcomed by staff and parents alike.

Mrs Combs said the past four weeks of home-learning had been "full-on" and the return to normalcy will be well-appreciated.

"The students had regular contact with their teachers of course but it's just not the same as being with your peers in a classroom setting," Mrs Combs said.

"I've spoken to quite a few mums and while some have had a really positive time, for most it was a mix of ups and downs."

Students will only be back in class for a week before they are sent back home for school holidays, but Mrs Combs said the return to routine would still be beneficial.

"I think it's a real blessing to be back on site and even if it is only a week I think it will be a good circuit breaker," she said.

"There were lots of big smiles this morning and lots of junior school kids running up the hill to the playground so the mood is pretty positive."
