Above-average rainfall is expected to increase crop and grass growth over the spring months, with overall weather conditions predicted to be similar to last year.

This has raised concerns with RFS Riverina operations officer Bradley Stewart regarding the role harvesting may play leading into summer.

"The largest fire we had last year grew to 450 hectares which destroyed a harvester and a large amount of unharvested crop, so that's where our general attention is," Mr Stewart said.

"The unfortunate reality of harvesting is that it comes with a greater risk of ignition because those machines are designed for operation in Europe and North America where there's less of a chance of sparks occurring in a combustible area."

The RFS 'Get Ready Weekend' encourages individuals and families to prepare themselves for the potential threat of fire.

Mr Stewart said simple things locals can do include discussing whether they'll evacuate or defend their properties.
