TWO of Australia’s best-known shops – Smiggle and Muffin Break – are about to open in Wagga. Both businesses will have outlets in the Sturt Mall.Smiggle’s range of colourful and funky stationery is hugely popular with teenagers, while Muffin Break is an internationally franchised coffee shop.Smiggle will open on Saturday, April 16 in a shop formerly occupied by Myami Surf and Street Wear near the mall’s Forsyth Street entrance.Muffin Break will join the set of Baylis Street eateries with its position at the front of the mall where Dick Smith traded until it opened a larger outlet inside the mall this week.Wagga will be Smiggle’s 99th outlet; the 100th will open in Singapore soon.Smiggle (a play on words from the phrase “where a smile meets a giggle”) is an Australian company, said regional manager Daniel Hillier. He said Wagga was chosen to have an outlet because of its large and growing population and because of demand from Smiggle “fans” in the city. The store will employ about six staff members, Mr Hillier said.He said the company’s broad philosophy was to make education more exciting.Until now, the closest Smiggle shop to Wagga has been in Canberra.Muffin Break fans have not had to go as far as Canberra for their fix of muffins, coffee and other treats. There are two outlets in Albury among more than 170 across Australia.Muffin Break is a concept that originated in Canada and was introduced into Australia at Coolangatta in 1989.Meanwhile, clothing company Rivers said yesterday it was “looking into the area” after closing its Sturt Mall outlet but was yet to find another suitable site.
