The community of Grong Grong is working to purchase the Royal Hotel, establishing a fixed unit trust.
The team behind the initiative is raising the capital by calling for investment blocks of $5000.
Their end goal? To make it a destination as part of their journey to rebuild the town.
Grong Grong resident Cain Gawne said he does not know anything like this that has been done before.
He said the current owners had moved here two years ago and were looking to sell it, adding that a common talking point was that a local should buy it.
"So we decided why shouldn't we buy it," Mr Gawne said.
"We want people from here, from Wagga, and even people from Newcastle, Sydney, and Melbourne to buy a share because it's part of the great Aussie dream to own a pub.
"You can buy a $5000 block as an individual or in a group, and then it's run by a board made up of the five co-founding members, and then five representatives voted in."
Mr Gawne said they have already settled on a selling price with the owner, and they will know by September if they have raised enough capital.
The plan is to start renovations straight away and create a family-friendly environment that still feels like a true country pub.
Mr Gawne said the keyword is "destination".
"To support a pub in a small town, the population of Grong Grong is only about 250 people, you need consistent business," he said.
"The aim is to turn it into a destination so you can support coming from outside of town, especially people who helped buy it in the first place.
"You get to patronise your own pub."
Mr Gawne said Grong Grong is a "unique town" with a great band of locals.
"The best thing is the community spirit and the people out there," he said.
"It's a rare opportunity, and we would love to see everybody jump on board."
