WHILE snakes are slithering throughout the city, the snake man is run off his feet. There have been reports of three snakes sighted around Lake Albert in the last week, but Wagga’s snake catcher, Tony Davis is simply seeing brown snakes everywhere.“I think there is a few more, mainly because of the grain crops and I think there is a mouse plague coming from South Australia, so snakes come out where there’s food,” he said.“Because we’re getting into mating season, it’s just starting now and I’m going to get a little bit busier over the next few weeks.“The thing is, a lot of the little ones are out too, and that’s a little bit unusual because the little ones are last year’s young ones and they don’t usually come out until next month.”With the abundance of those smaller snakes, Mr Davis said it is important not to disregard them just because of their size.“The little browns, even though they’re little, they are just as dangerous – all venomous snakes are born with venom and born with fangs,” he said.Mr Davis said recent rain and the rising river is likely to have played a part in the increase in snake sightings, as they are pushed out of their homes.A spokesman for Wagga City Council said there hasn’t been an increase in reports to council regarding snakes, and that inroads are being made into getting the city mowed, and higher-use areas such as around the lake, in parks and river bends are being tended to more regularly than other areas.
