At 7:30PM Wagga recorded wind speeds of 67km/ hour, as the city was added to a list of areas included in a severe weather warning for damaging winds issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 7:26PM.
Areas included in the warning were Yass, Wagga Wagga, Young, Tumbarumba, Selwyn, Adaminaby, Temora, Cootamundra, Gundagai, Tumut, Khancoban and Junee.
The Bureau of Meteorology said winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gust in excess of 90 km/h are expected in lower altitude areas with rain and thunderstorms.
Wind speeds are expected to ease below the warning threshold tonight or by early Thursday morning once a cold front moves through the region.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that back country travel be postponed until conditions improve.
The State Emergency Services has recommended people move vehicles under cover or away from trees, secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcon, keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
They also said that trees damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
If observed, report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
