But that was the case at Murrumbidgee Turf Club on Sunday as two of the first three races were shared.
La Valkyrie ($2.10) and Jeddalet ($61) were unable to be split in the opening race, the Laser Plumbing & Electrical Wagga Maiden Handicap (1600m).
Just over an hour later, Lady Brook ($2.10) and Underwood ($9.50) dead heated in the Castle Lane Catering Wagga Whiz (1000m).
Lady Brook was resuming and led right up until the post when a brave Underwood, who was three wide without cover for the trip, dived at the mare to split the prize.
It was Underwood's first win since joining the Chris Heywood stable back in April. Purchased by Kooringal Stud as a broodmare prospect, the Deep Field mare was rewarded for her consistency after three consecutive minor placings in the lead up.
Heywood is keen to push on to the $35,000 Ian Reid Sprint (1200m) at Wagga on August 26 with Underwood.
"Stuart Lamont gave us a chance to try and win a race with her before the breeding season and she's done well," Heywood said.
"She's one of the smallest horses I've ever trained so having no weight today helped her. She's got plenty of raw ability."
Meantime, Wagga's Mick Travers produced a top ride to get Mathrin ($4.20) home in the Anthony Malone Constructions Maiden Plate (1200m).
Mathrin was having her first start for Travers after previously being with the Andrew Dale stable at Wangaratta.
At her 12th race start, Mathrin raced away to score by two and a quarter lengths from Whenitrainsitpours ($5.50) and Epauvescent ($8.50).
Wagga trainer Gary Colvin enjoyed a good day. He had Jeddalet dead heat at big odds in the opener and finished with a win to Nic's Hero ($6.50) in the JJ's Waste & Recycling Benchmark 58 Handicap (1200m).
