A Wagga motorcyclist with a thirst for the throttle has lost his licence and his ride after overtaking an off-duty police officer while hitting eye-watering speeds.

The off-duty officer was driving along Plumpton Road at Lake Albert around 5pm on Wednesday when a rider on a Yamaha motorcycle screamed around him at high speed.
The senior constable followed the rider to a street nearby, spoke to the 30-year-old man and identified himself as a police officer.

The rider is alleged to have been travelling at an estimated speed of 170 km/h in the signposted 80km/h zone
He faces a fine of $2547 for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h and his licence was suspended for six months.
The registration plate of the motorcycle has also been confiscated for three months.
