Riverina MP Michael McCormack announced the funding on Wednesday.
"Leon Burger, who is the airport facility manager here at the airport, tells me that the lighting is still working on about 1985 infrastructure and this is important that we upgrade it, that we get it to the standard that we need, that we require," Mr McCormack said.
Wagga City Council operates the airport and mayor Greg Conkey said replacing the ageing lighting infrastructure would be good for the city.
"We have just completed some new taxiways here, those taxiways are not lit so they can only be used in daylight hours," he said.
"This new lighting will enable those taxiways to be lit and used in the way they were designed to do."
Three other Riverina airports also received funding under the $30 million Round 2 of the Regional Airports Program.
