ALBURY trainer Mitch Beer sealed his first Southern District Racing Association (SDRA) premiership with a victory at Corowa on Monday.
It seemed only fitting that Beer trained the winner of the last race of the SDRA season as Seventh Seal ($7.50) took out the Balldale Hotel Benchmark 58 Handicap (1000m).
It was Seventh Seal's first win since joining the Beer stable from the Snowden team, and was typical of many of his winners for the season, a tried online purchase.
"He's a lovely-bred Fastnet Rock, he's a full brother to First Seal and I think we paid $12,000 for him off the internet so the people that have gone in him have been frustratingly happy with a few placings but great to put a win on the board today," Beer said.
Kayla Nisbet rode Seventh Seal to victory, as the four-year-old held off the fast-finishing Chairman's Choice ($9.00), with Underwood ($7.50) back in third.
Beer said it was an honour to claim the SDRA trainer's premiership for the first time.
"For not having been here long, there's some fantastic trainers in this area and been training here a long time and some good people that have won the premiership as well so to be amongst them is terrific," Beer said.
"We've got a great team moving forward and an even better team of people than we do horses."
Wangaratta trainer Andrew Dale claimed a winning double at Corowa after bringing a big team of 12 horses to the races.
Mojo Music ($5.00) won on debut in the Maiden Handicap (1000m), while Mescaminto ($3.60) was a dominant winner of the Class One Handicap (1400m).
Dale has a big opinion of Mojo Music.
"He was in a really difficult position early in the run and in his jump outs, he's shown us really good gate speed so it was a little bit nerve-wracking early when he was back and doing a lot of things wrong...but he does have a lot of natural ability and I think that's just what's got him through in the end today," he said.
Brodie Loy rode Mojo Music to victory, the second leg of a winning double.
