Wagga's Dylan Martin was one of 11 Kookaburras who made their Olympic debut in the 5-3 win over the world number 15 side on Saturday.
However up against the fourth-best team in the world there were no signs of letting their rivals back into the contest.
Instead it was the world number ones who scored a 7-1 win.
Coach Coach Colin Batch is looking to build on that performance to ensure a high ranking in the quarter finals.
"We had a great game today, so we have to maintain that momentum," Batch said.
"At the start India had us under a fair bit of pressure and we had to defend strongly.
"The score could have easily been much closer if they had scored an early goal, but we withstood that early pressure and then took over the game.
"The counterattack, particularly in the second quarter, was outstanding.
"The guys are excited to have played so well, it was a good result, but it is still only the second game in a long tournament."

Australia opened the scoring after 10 minutes as Daniel Beale converted a penalty corner.
Leading 1-0 after the first quarter, Australia soon took the game away from the Indians with four goals in five minutes.
India responded as Dilpreet Singh scored to put his team on the board but two goals to Brett Govers, one from a penalty stroke and the other from a penalty corner, had the Kookaburras out to a 6-1 lead heading into the final quarter.
A goal to Tim Brand sealed the big win.
The win was Australia's largest over the eight-time gold medal winners, surpassing a 6-1 victory in 1976.
Australia will look to continue their winning start against Argentina, the defending champions, on Tuesday.
The game will start at 10.30am.
Argentina, who are ranked seventh, were held to a 1-all draw with Spain to kick off their campaign before taking a 2-1 win over Japan on Sunday.
Meanwhile Leeton's Dylan Pietsch and the Australian men's rugby sevens side were left to rue a poor start to their campaign.
Taking on Argentina in the first of their two games on Monday, Australia conceded 24 points in the first half after their rivals dominated possession.
They did fight back and closed within five points in the dying seconds but Argentina scored off the restart to take a 29-19 victory.
However Australia responded in a big way to take a 42-5 win over the Republic Of Korea later that night.
Pietsch scored the last try of the game to help boost their chances of making the quarter finals.
They have an even bigger test up against New Zealand at 11.30am on Tuesday before the finals start later that evening.
New Zealand have won both their pool games in impressive fashion.
