A number of major intersections across the city will be upgraded and traffic impacted over the next five months as part of the travel plan which aims to improve access for cyclists and pedestrians into and around the city.

The travel plan is a $15.8 million, 56 kilometre network of bike and footpaths paths linking the outer suburbs of Wagga with Central with the key objective of removing motor vehicles off the road and increasing commuter cycling.

Works will include lane closures and detours and will be predominantly focused on improving pedestrian islands to allow safer crossing of busy streets.

This week, the first upgrades began on the intersection of Fernleigh Road and Glenfield Road. They are expected to continue until July 30 though wet weather may impact the timeline.

Road impacted include the south bound turn right lane of Glenfield Road which has been closed and the east bound straight and right turn lane on Fernleigh Road which is also closed. Speeds are also reduced at all entry points of the roundabout.

The works on all intersections are expected to run between 7am and 5pm on weekdays and 8am and 1pm on Saturdays with traffic likely to be impacted at peak times.

Works were also scheduled to begin today on Forsyth and Murray Street are should run between July 22 and August 4.

Council Senior Project Manager Silas Darby said the works would ensure the safety of shared pathways for pedestrians and cyclists using the active travel network and warned the upgrades were predicted to take two weeks on each intersection.

"Linking the pathways is a vital part of the Active Travel Plan project which has the potential to benefit so many people in the community," Mr Darby said. "It's about keeping everyone safe when they're out and about using the pathways and crossing roads."
