In recent weeks, the industry has been under scrutiny following the news that three Sydney-based removalists who travelled through the Riverina and later tested positive to COVID-19 are now the subject of a criminal investigation.

The trio travelled to South Australia through Victoria, with two of them testing positive to COVID-19 upon returning to NSW.

The workers stopped at Gundagai Coles Express on July 8, and in the towns of Jindera, Hay and North Albury on July 10.

A NSW Health spokesperson said that it is still a reasonable excuse for removalists based in Greater Sydney to leave their residence for work and travel to regional NSW.

This excludes those based in the Fairfield, Canterbury-Bankstown and Liverpool Local Government Areas.

However, removalists based in Greater Sydney who travel more than 50 kilometres outside the boundaries must not enter premises for work unless they have been tested for COVID-19 in the preceding seven days.

"Removalists must have evidence of their test available for inspection on request by an employer, occupier of the premises, or the police," the spokesperson said.

"There is no testing requirement for regional removalists or Greater Sydney-based removalists who are working less than 50 kilometres from the Greater Sydney border.

"Any person who has been in Greater Sydney in the previous 14 days must still follow the stay-at-home rules while they are outside Greater Sydney, that is, only going to work and their accommodation, and shopping for essential goods such as food."

Removalists based in Fairfield, Canterbury Bankstown and Liverpool local government areas are only permitted to move furniture from premises to premises within these LGAs.
